Pop Poppies - hat in stranded knitting
Pop Poppies is a simple tam with a bold motif in stranded knitting, designed by Sarah Mombert. The colours switch between leaves and flowers - don't hesitate to go for the brightest shades to knit a hat that will light up your winter.
The hat is knitted in the round, from the bottom up. Sarah suggests you try knitting with a yarn in each hand, since she thinks that's easier - but it's up to you to decide whether you want to be an ambidextrous knitter or not! Once the knitting done, you can block your hat on a plate to shape it.
The two-colour motifs are explained in chart form only. All other instructions are written.
For the initial hat (in pink and blue), Sarah used her own handdyed yarns. For the hat in fingering weight merino (in magenta and green), she used 50 g of each colour in fingering weight merino, col. fuchsia and lime tree. You will need approx. 160 - 200 m (175 - 200 yds) of fingering weight yarn in each colour.
Recommended needles: 2.5 mm and 3 mm, circulars or double points. Adapt needle size to get gauge.
Gauge: 30 sts x 32 rounds = 10 cm (4") stranded knitting on larger needles.
