When knitting this interesting and fun shawlette, put on your pink glasses to see La vie en rose!

La vie en rose is a song by Edith Piaf - to see and hear her sing this song in 1954, follow this link.

When designing this very contemporary, yet romantic accessory, Hélène Marcy/EclatDuSoleil found her inspiration in an old Shetland lace border. Her construction is less traditional, and you will be turning your work at a right angle several times in the process of making this reversible little shawl.

You start by knitting the border, from one side to the other. The work is then rotated and stitches are picked up along the border selvedge, to create a horizontal band, delicately underlined by two contrasting garter ridges (unless you prefer a solid-coloured shawl). The body of the shawl is worked at a 90 degrees angle to this band, binding off its stitches in the process. For a perfect finish, a knitted I-cord encloses the upper shawl edge.

Size of the finished shawl, after blocking: 88 cm (34.5") long x 26 cm (10.25") wide at the widest part

To knit La vie en rose, you will need 800 m (880 yds) / 100 g of a fingering weight wool yarn, and a few grams of a yarn in the same weight in a contrasting colour.

Recommended needle: a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle, 80 cm (30") long, or the size needed to get gauge.

Gauge : 28 sts x 43 rows = 10 cm (4") in garter stitch after blocking.
